Event
Planning
There are several types of events and activities that
can be organized for the annual Darwin Day Celebrations. Depending
upon your time, budget, resources, volunteer base and audience,
you will need to find an event, or combination of activities that
will serve your purpose and the main focus you wish to
pursue.
Here we are gathering thoughtful "how tos" for the
coordination of a variety of large and small events. You may find
these resources helpful in planning an event of your own. For
currently available resources, click on the events with title
links. More ideas can also be found in the Event
Activities area. The
Annual Darwin Day Lecture The Darwin Day Program promotes an
annual Darwin Day Lecture at colleges, universities, and related
venues across the world. We invite faculty to join our efforts by
coordinating an annual Darwin Day Lecture, or lecture series, at
their school. Student and community groups may also be interested in
helping to organize an annual lecture for Darwin Day celebrations.
Wonderfest:
Science Lecture Series Wonderfest is a celebration of science
and wonder through public discourse about provocative scientific
questions. Wonderfest aspires to challenge unexamined beliefs,
stimulate curiosity, promote careful reasoning, and encourage
lifelong learning. Wonderfest achieves these ends by presenting a
series of scientific events to the general public. At most of these
events, pairs of articulate and accomplished researchers debate
compelling questions at the edge of scientific understanding.
Director Tucker Hiatt provides helpful suggestions on how the
Wonderfest Science Series may be incorporated into a Darwin Day
event. Click on the title link above for more information.
The
Darwin Day Event for the Teaching of Science &
Evolution The Tennessee Darwin Coalition has been holding
Darwin Day events since 1997 and has inspired many other groups to
do the same. This planning resource, created by Dr. Massimo
Pigliucci, combines a variety of activities into a campus-wide
event. The activities involved, such as the Teacher's Workshop,
perform an invaluable outreach service to the surrounding community.
Other activities provide enjoyment for all ages and provide a
community-wide celebration. The focus of the Tennessee Darwin Day
event is on the teaching of evolution and the creationist
phenomenon. Other themes can also be used for a large-scale event
such as this.
Darwin Day
Classroom Activities A variety of classroom activities can be
coordinated by teachers for different age levels. Activities can be
planned for part of the day, the entire day or be scheduled
throughout the week of February 12th.
