Approximately 10am (Queensland) time on 12 February Location:
Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia Activities: Advertisement
announcing flyover will appear in Gold Coast Bulletin on 11
February. On the morning of Wednesday 12 February 2003 at
approximately 10am Queensland time, a single engine aircraft will
take-off from Murwillumbah airstrip towing a banner. As the aircraft
gathers height and speed the banner will unfurl to reveal the
message: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARWIN - EVOLUTION RULES The aircraft
will fly east to the coast, then turn north travelling along the
coast to Paradise Point, returning to Murwillumbah flying in a
corridor bounded by the Gold Coast Highway and the Expressway. The
aircraft will be in the air for two hours. A diversion to the route
will occur when the aircraft performs a fly-over in the sky above
the small primary school at Ingleside (inland from Burleigh
Heads). At the time of the fly-over a local resident and parent
Brad Solomon will present the children of the Ingleside School with
a set of books on science. The books are a Darwin's Day gift
presentation from The Humanist Society of Queensland. The
initiative is part of a worldwide birthday celebration drawing
attention to the outstanding intellectual achievement of Charles
Darwin in providing a factual account of how life on planet Earth
began. The Gold Coast celebration has been organised by the
Darwinists Down Under, the group members are from the ranks of the

12 February at 14.30 Darwin in Caricature This event looks at
the wide range of satirical cartoons produced in Britain and America
after Darwin's Origin of Species was published in 1859. It is
illustrated with images that are sometimes cruel, sometimes
affectionate, but always to the point. Some feature gorillas and, in
later years, Darwin himself as the ape - and came to represent for
Victorians some of the crucial issues about human origins generated
by Darwin's work. The discussion will be led by Janet Browne,
professor of the history of biology at the Wellcome Trust Centre for
the History of Medicine, University College London. After the event,
Janet will be signing copies of her recent Darwin biography, The
Power of Place. This event forms part of the Spring Programme of
Darwin Centre Live events - a varied daily programme of informal
free events where you can meet curators and researchers to find out
about their work, recent scientific discoveries and the Museum's
vast collections. These events take place at 11.30 and 14.30 in the
Museum's new Darwin Centre. Visit www.nhm.ac.uk/darwincentre for
full listings.
Also on Darwin Day: See Darwin
specimens Phase One of the Darwin Centre, named in honour of
Charles Darwin, opened in September 2002 at the Natural History
Museum and gives visitors a unique insight into the scientific
research currently underway at the Museum. As well as the daily
programme of events, Darwin Centre Explore tours leave every half an
hour, taking visitors behind the scenes of our collections
storerooms where they can view some of the 22 million wet-preserved
specimens housed within the centre. Since opening, some 120,000
visitors have been to the Darwin Centre and from 12 February
visitors who take a Darwin Centre Explore Tour will have the
opportunity to see some of the specimens collected by Darwin on his
1831 Beagle voyage.
Meet Charles Darwin Charles Darwin
will be wandering through the galleries of the Museum on his
birthday - sharing his radical scientific ideas with the visitors he
meets. Charles Darwin is one of the Museum's gallery characters that
appear in the Museum regularly. Visitors will be able to spot
Charles Darwin in and around the Central Hall between 11.30 and
15.30.

characters. Following Sandford's performance, members of the
Biology Club will informally discuss what Charles Darwin means to

Event: The Impact of Darwin on Religion and Humanism Date:
Wednesday, February 12th. The program begins at 7:00
pm. Location: Vernon Manor Hotel, 400 Oak Street, Cincinnati,
Ohio Activities: The Free Inquiry Group of Cincinnati and
Northern Kentucky and the American Humanist Association (AHA)
present: "The Impact of Darwin on Religion and Humanism" this coming
Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 pm. This day commemorates Darwin’s
Birthday. Fred Edwords is the Editorial Director of the American
Humanist Association in Washington, DC. This program will be part of
an international celebration of science and humanity in honor of
Darwin Day. Edwords is a leading voice for Humanism in the United
States and abroad, and is recognized as an outstanding lecturer and
debater on Humanist philosophical issues covering topics from civil
liberties to the creation-evolution debate. Edwords’ talk will be
particularly pertinent considering the shift of politics and
religion in America over the last two years and the subsequent
expansion of the AHA. “With the creation-evolution debate re-ignited
and with George W. Bush using the presidency to promote a sectarian
agenda we have our work cut out for us,” says Edwords. “It is going
to be much more difficult for Darwin’s sound theories to prevail in
an atmosphere where government is hindering the progress of
science.”

voyage of the Beagle and how it influenced Darwin's ideas, what
those ideas are, and how the manuscript sent to Darwin by Alfred
Russell Wallace stimulated the publication of The Origin of Species.
Dr. Hutchison will talk about Mendel's work, its rediscovery in
1900, new ideas about how evolution proceeds, DNA, and the modern
scientific evidence for the Theory of Evolution. There will be a
question and answer period afterward.

DeNoma Event: "Paleontology Before Darwin: Suitable for Young
Audiences?" Date: Saturday, Feb 15, at 7:30 P.M. Location:
Portland State University, Science Building 1, Room
107 Activities: Dr. Thwaites, professor emeritus of biology, San
Diego State University, is a strong advocate for high scientific
standards in science education. High school biology texts don't give
a historical perspective for evolution. In most texts, the
observation that species have changed over time is lumped together
with how that change occurred. Because of this confusion, students
question the observation as well as the explanation. Thwaites will
discuss the geologic observations leading to Darwin's historic
contribution to science and Thwaites's own unsuccessful attempt to
have this historical background for evolution included in a
well-known high school biology text. This talk is free and open
to the public.
