CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN
12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

- The Origin of Species (1859)

Welcome to the Darwin Day Program

The Darwin Day Program is a non-profit organization participating in educational and social outreach on topics found within the evolutionary sciences and related disciplines.

The Program features the work of men and women throughout history who have contributed to the understanding of life within the physical universe, while honoring the pioneering role played by Charles Darwin. The program highlights topics of interest within science and also explores how evolution impacts humanity.

The Darwin Day Program features year-round educational outreach efforts under the project heading of “Evolving Awareness.” Educational projects include providing materials and resources to educators and students, working with like-minded organizations to build learning opportunities for all ages, and fostering an environment where the public understanding of science is of primary importance.

The program encourages groups and individuals throughout the world to participate in the annual celebration of Darwin Day on February 12. Participation involves the coordination of events and activities in communities across the globe, initiating educational outreach programs, developing support services for educators, and celebrating the excitement of scientific investigation and discovery.

The long-term goal of the Program is to culminate the vision of Darwin Day into a global celebration in 2009 and to increase the educational outreach projects available. 2009 marks the bicentennial of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. In the intervening years the program intends to build toward the goal of a global celebration by reaching out to all science-enthusiasts around the world – encouraging them to celebrate Darwin Day and champion the public understanding and appreciation of science within their communities.

We are pleased you have visited the Darwin Day Program site. Please browse our areas for educational material, resources links, event listings and many other things evolutionary. We also invite you to join us as a volunteer, participant or supporter. But, most of all, we hope that you find and keep a piece of knowledge or understanding gleaned from our efforts.
