David's ToDo 6 Apr'06 pm 3:00: Gather past events names and e-mails in spreadsheet. * 2004 on 10Dec ; 2003,2002 on 13 Dec Make it a database. * 2004 on 10Dec; 2003,2002 on 13 Dec Mail Bob's letter to them inviting registering 2005 Events. * 2004 on 10Dec ;2003 on 13 Dec; 2002 on 13 Dec. Get different names from 2003 events. * Done on 13 Dec Respond to questions/donation question/comments from people by personal e-mail (from Bob?). * Donations question and browser ugliness questions done 11Dec. General encouragement and database maintenance is ongoing. Set up admin account at Eathlink, in case we are getting messages there that are important. * Done 10Dec Set up some accounts of me and others to check for whether we secretly are having spam suppression. * No sign of that happening. 13 Dec Fix the use of my personal account so it's clear we're using rstephens@darwindaycelebration.org at Earthlink correctly in the mailings. * Diagnosed as the X-Identity-Key: id4 is needed for Bob's account when using the shared SMTP outgoing stream. It was probably defaulting to id1, which is the identifier for dharris234@mindspring.com. I copied in a bunch of other header lines to look more standard. 11 Dec'04 * Mailed to 119 profs in %Evolution% departments. 13Dec * Mailed to 608 profs in Physics% depts. 20Dec04. * Mailed to 632 profs in Chemist% depts. 20Dec04. * Got the whole list of 2002 Supporters and put it after the new ones on the dispsupport page. * 20Dec * Changed the 2005 button to read "Events Registered for 2005" * 20Dec Applied Jeanine's edits * on 21-23 Dec. Found that Blake and my Dreamweaver sites are set differently, which almost caused the recent changes to be obliterated on the next "going public"! * Explored the settings and found that there were several ways that Blake and my changes might be lost, as Bob was reporting. I documented those and made some changes in the settings of FlashFXP and tried some new procedures. 23 Dec. * MOre of Jeanine's edits and another publication of the devs. 24Dec * Fixed INternet connection problem (wrong wires among DSL modem, router, and Blake's machine). * Handled more incoming mail with questions, comments, commitments, demand for book refund, etc. * Seemed to get Bob's AOL account and related software to work. Installed updates from Microsoft, some long overdue, and ran a complete virus scan (none found). 27 Dec04 Made a counter but it only counted the displays of the orphaned page on which it resides. * 3Jan05 Studied Web-Stat and Webalizer and raw Excel analysis as possible ways of handling analysis of logs. 3Jan05 Examining other alternatives * 5Jan05 See if Meetup.com can be a way of getting in touch with Likely supporters. * Signed up on 31 Dec. THink about a possible poster or more in .pdf format, and possible slogans. * Informal generation by me and my buddy from Santa Cruz. Made a list of slogans 2-3 Jan'05 Send final professors emails over 2 days. * Sent all but 50 (SMTP seems locked) on 5 Jan05 Rest on 7 Jan. Called listsyoucanafford@excite.com at 888-330-4919 authorizing buy of 28,000 science teachers (email address only from 3 months ago and run through verifier to drop dead ones). Arrived in email and I distributed copies. 7 Jan 05 Emailed them to Linux machine where I split them into batches of 199 and later added a label line at start of each batch (file). Mailed 400 by 10Jan. 199 on 12Jan. Did I mail to 'Anthropolgy' [sic]? YES! Change to 'Anthropology'. * Done 9Jan05 Look into Ben's list of problems/questions about the Web site. * Replied to message, fixing part of dispevent/index.php page. Need to copy the HR database onto the local machine and get the country names right, and change the remote database entries for country. 30Dec'04 Copied the database 31 Dec. Got the country codes right on the remote site. Worked with Blake to get translation of the Public (Y/N) value so it displays as (Public) or (Private). Fixed his display of the State so it goes BEFORE the country. 9 Jan. Remove table lines and colors stuff for Events listing. * Blake and I did on 8Jan05. Languages page needs to have the "HERE" be a pointer to something useful. * Someone did it by 8 Jan05 More of Jeanine's edits. * Will work with Lola to have her do the edit changes on the DW pages. MIT <- Harvard * CHecked on home page, fixed in outgoing mail to 199 science teachers. 10Jan05 Renew Norton anti-virus subscription on David's machine. 12Jan05 Fixed "mayemail" field that was blocking event signups. 12 Jan05 Display COUNTRIES as NAME OF COUNTRY rather than code number, for Events. REnumber the countries to match the lookup table numbers. Display URL for EVents. * Blake did it 18Dec. I found problem unless 'http://' form used. I entered that as neeed in the table of Events, as a temporary fix. Also lengthened the URL field to 100 to accomodate the Brit.Hum't Asssoc's URL. Make "Do not email" database table so we honor the Unsubscribe requests. * Will be done by hand until the Perl automated version is done. * Hand entry and developed the SQL needed since MySQL doesn't have nested SELECTs. 22Jan Permission includes to use the STATE of supporters and Contact Person's. * Fixed 12 Dec. Blake added the State display on 12 Dec. * The State seems to have gone away 20 Dec??? * We put it back 8Jan05 Figure how to send HTML messages in Unsent Messages method. Can be done for a fixed message, but can't do much fancy HTML generation, and the resulting sent by the sendit.pl (SMTP sender program). ~1 May05 WOrked on the NSF application in February. Get email addresses for the advisors. Most on 27 May, rest on 30th. Wrote a draft of advisor letter beginning. Made advisor links on home page point to our advisors page. Removed John Maynard Smith (now deceased) from our ome page and moved other ones to balance the space. Cited problems with our horse evolution picture. 30May05 Maybe a little disclaimer and pointer will handle it adequately, 1 Jun 05. Stop paying HostRocket for secondary use of DarwinDayCelebration.org. * Requested removal of darwindaycelebration.org from HostRocket on 1 Feb'05. No luck. WOrked harder and arranged for nonpayment of renewal on 1 June 05, and arranged for Earthlink to register it on Melbourne IT on 1 Jun. Get the DARWINDAYCELEBRATION.ORG name registered with Earthlink's registrar and away from DreamHost. Registered with Melbourne IT, the registrar of Earthlink.net. 1 June 05. Propogate advisor changes on home and advisor pages to the English and remote places. 2Jun05 Datetime stamp on remote database entries. Done ~15 May 05 Doesn't seem to be working (30May).Yes it does 16Jun. The arrows between the years as something other than wallpaper. Done by Blake around Dec'05 The animals line should clearly mean lists of past and coming events. See Bob's suggestion for enlarging the labels and taking out the animal pics. * Done by Blake ~18dec'04. Program for extracting email addresses from UNSUBSCRIBE emails. And put them in their own tables in the database. ~ Feb'06. Make a page that is easy to modify and will appear on all occurences of one language. ~Mar'06 ************************************************************************************************ Make list of who we sent to, and results (Unsubscribe, new address, name not known, not employed there, on sabattical, etc.?). * 78 of them on 18 Dec'04. * Perl can probably do this as well as anything easily available. Find a more automated way to handle what comes back from a mailing. Some kinds of codes? Handoff of the markings after the ? in return emails? Can MailMerge generate those unique codes? Could a script do more rapidly what the mail merge is doing now? Mailparse in PHP? * Leaning toward ActivePerl, a general "glueing" language that runs on all operating systems and started as a text extracting language. 17Jan05 Developing a Perl program called procreturns.pl in late May and early June, overlapped with direct outreach efforts. Get the best parts of Amanda's site and integrate them with ours. Lists of possible topics for new events can help organizers create engaging Darwin Day activity. Make Perl scan through Web usage logs, doing things like computing time since arrival on a page and where the person went next. General analysis of logs. Write and get "Privacy policy" approved. Pictures for Ann Winn (Info acct). Involve both professional scientific organizations and science-positive groups like Sigma Xi. Make the registration page for Friends and Supporters avoid duplicate email addresses. Let registrants login to change their personal info. And add their longitude and latitude. Add database fields for latitude and longitude and add the capacity to tell people which Darwin Day events or organizations are near enough for them to participate in person. As the number of annual events grows larger, we will add the capacity to retrieve only events that occur within a requested country or state or distance, so that the list presented to a visitor is not too long and the events are not too distant. Let event posters login to change their event listings. Work with translators to make other language pages. Ask visitors for, and use, a designation of "my preferred language". Get more content on evolution and science. "What is science and why do science and religion look at each other so strangely?" "Just what part of evolution don't you agree with?" Recommended links to other science sites talking about evolution. Original explanations of our own: "What do all those different pictues of DNA mean?" Modify the horse evolution picture to point to correct full analysis of the evolutionary tree for horses. Create an automated verification procedure that assures that someone who signs up as a Friend or Supporter actually uses the e-mail address that is given. --------------- For Blake ------------- 3 across for the supporters from the database.
